FLAVOR PROFILE
This wine shows fragrant strawberry and blackberry aromas with earthy cocoa undertones. Silky and richly textured, this wine’s palate impression is balanced by a high-note of acidity recalling tart plums. Harmonious red and black fruit flavors come together with earthy spice notes on this wine’s long finish.
THE VINEYARD
South of the Doctor’s vineyard and at a higher elevation, the Smith vineyard is less affected by early morning fog that any of Hahn’s vineyards. In contrast to the even slopes of Doctor’s and Lone Oak, the blocks that make up the Smith vineyard follow the contours of ridges and valleys in Santa Lucia Highlands. The diversity of slope, soil, and aspect create dozens of micro-environments where different Pinot Noir clones fully express their unique traits.
2012 VINTAGE
2012 was noted as a consistent and temperate vintage. It began with a warm winter and a gentle spring, ensuring even fruit set. Temperate weather continued into the fall, allowing for the extended growing season characteristic of the Santa Lucia Highlands.
WINEMAKING
In crafting the Lucienne vineyard designates, there are some practices that we use consistently. Small open-top fermentation tanks, an initial three-day cold-soak, and gentle manual punch-downs are mandatory for our delicate Pinot Noir grapes. This winemaking consistency shines a light on the inherent distinctiveness of the vineyards, and lets us emphasize their unique qualities. A few of our more exotic Pinot Noir clones (like Jardini, Calera and Mt. Eden) have been spectacularly successful in the Smith vineyard, lending an added mystique to this wine. In the finished product, we see shades of Lone Oak’s aroma profile and Doctor’s intensity, but with greater brightness and vibrancy than either.
